Are you having trouble seeing the bottom of the pool because the water is too cloudy?
Is your water milky or cloudy with particles suspended in the water?

What are the possible causes of cloudy pool water?

  • The pH of the water is too high
  • The level of disinfectant in the water is too low
  • Filtration is insufficient, faulty or clogged
  • Limescale in the water (hard water)
  • The pool water may be over-stabilised

Treatment advice :

➽ If your pH is not correct :

➽ If the quantity of disinfectant (chlorine, bromine, etc.) in the water is insufficient:

  • Carry out a shock treatment with HTH SHOCK powder based on calcium hypochlorite at a rate of 150 g per 10m3 of water (non-stabilised chlorine).
  • Then flocculate using HTH RAPIDFLOC, a liquid flocculant for sand filters.
This will clarify the water by precipitating impurities to the bottom of the tank. Use with filtration stopped.
  • Then wash the filter repeatedly and run it continuously for 24 to 48 hours.
This action will considerably improve the quality of filtration and, consequently, help to maintain crystal-clear water.

➽ If the filtration time is unsuitable:

  • Adapt the filtration time to the water temperature according to the following calculation:
Water temperature / 2 + 1 hour (learn more about filtration time here)
  • Filter during the day rather than at night.

➽ Presence of limescale (hard water)

If the hardness (T.H.) of the water is too high, above 250 mg per litre, it leads to accelerated scaling of the equipment and the pool.

  • Keep the pH between 7.0 and 7.2 maximum.
  • Add HTH STOP-CALC when you open the pool and each time you add water, depending on the hardness of your mains water.

➽ In the event of over-stabilised water:

  • Check the stabiliser content; if it exceeds 80 ppm, the pool must be partially or totally drained as follows:
    ↳ from 80 to 120 ppm = ½ pool
    ↳ over 120 ppm = ¾ of the pool

Use HTH STICK (stabiliser-free chlorine) as a regular treatment to avoid over-stabilisation in addition to HTH SHOCK powder.

To conclude:

To prevent cloudy water, it is strongly recommended to improve the fineness of filtration.
Using HTH UNIFLOC offers a pronounced clarifying effect for all types of filtration. Its two-layer tablet contains a universal flocculant and a preventive anti-algae agent.
