Why winterise your swimming pool?
This step is essential because it protects the structure and equipment of your pool from freezing.
It will also allow you to preserve the quality of the water so that you don’t find green water in the spring.
Covering the pool will protect it from leaves and various types of pollution and reinforce protection against algae by plunging the pool into darkness.
When should you winterise your swimming pool?
As soon as the water temperature drops steadily between 53°F and 59°F (12° – 15°C)
Key steps for closing the pool:
Disinfect the water and clean the pool
It is essential to clean the pool and disinfect the water two or three days before closing the pool:

- Brush the bottom, sides of the pool, skimmer basket and pump pre-filter
- Remove dead leaves and any other debris from the surface of the water
- Vacuum with the filter set to “drain” mode
- Clean the water line with HTH BORKLER GEL
- Measure the pH and adjust it to between 7.0 and 7.4
- Perform a shock treatment with HTH SHOCK, filtering continuously for 24 hours
Descale and clean the filter
HTH FILTERWASH thoroughly descales and cleans sand filters and cartridge filters
- Drain the filter down to the sand level
- Pour in the product, following the recommended dosage for the size of the filter
- Close and leave to act for 12 to 24 hours
- Backwash the filter (repeating the operation until the colour disappears from the inspection window)
- Rinse the filter

3 and 5 liters
HTH FILTERWASH is a coloured liquid, which makes it easier to rinse out.
Effective on sand, diatomaceous earth and cartridge filters, this innovative product offers a powerful solution for removing impurities and limescale, thereby extending the life of your filters.
Winterising the swimming pool
- Start by lowering the water level below the pool nozzles
- Drain the pipes
- Pour 300 ml of HTH SUPER WINTERPROTECT per 10 m³ around the pool to distribute the product evenly
- This long-lasting product is designed to prevent the formation of encrusting deposits that are so difficult to remove in spring and to combat the proliferation of algae

1 and 3 liters
Protect the pool
- To prevent freeze damage, install a line of winter floats diagonally across the pool
- Then place a skimmer freeze-protection device in each skimmer and a rubber plug in each return nozzle or vacuum point
- Disconnect the electrical panel and winterise your heating system and any other pool equipment (follow the manufacturer’s instructions)
Install a winter cover

The winter cover protects against leaves and various types of pollution. In addition, by plunging the pool into darkness, it provides protection against algae growth.
Please note! Allow an extra 40 cm all around the pool.
